IRA Announcer Contest Releases Assignments for Affiliate Championships

The announcer team hard at work!

BOSTON, Mass. - Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Commissioner Gary Caldwell released announcing assignments for four affiliate rowing championships today as the Association moved closer to selecting a winner in the 2017 IRA Collegiate Announcer Contest. “We had great fan support and terrific entries in the contest, “stated Caldwell, “and we have a tremendous opportunity for some of our contestants to work our affiliate championships, and further show their skills and excitement for our sport.”

The “Road to the IRA” continues with webcasts of the Women’s Sprints (Sunday, 4/30), New England Rowing Championships (Saturday, 5/6), National Invitational Rowing Championships (Friday, 5/12), and Men’s Eastern Sprints (Sunday, 5/14).

Women’s Sprints veteran and lead announcer Colleen Saville will be joined by contest semifinalists Joe Copeland and Eric Grasso who will headline the coverage on April 30th. Grasso and Copeland will then be joined by fellow contestant Evan Miesler at the New England Championships the following weekend. Former United States Naval Academy and Dartmouth College Lightweight Coach (and current Rowing Illustrated Podcaster) Steve Perry will anchor the National Invitational broadcasting crew, and Perry and Saville will join the longtime voice of the Men’s Sprints and lead announcer Fred Schoch in Worcester on Sunday, May 14th. Additionally, contest semifinalists David Wyant and Steve Todd will be showing their announcing chops at regattas in the South Eastern US and California over the next three weekends.

Final Selections for the IRA Broadcast team members and contest winner (who will join Fred Schoch on the announcing team), will be announced on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 simultaneously with the selection of crews for the 115th IRA National Championships.
