NIRC Coaches Announce Postseason Awards

WORCESTER, Mass. – The National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC) has announced the recipients of the regatta’s postseason awards. Bates College Head Coach, Peter Steenstra, was named NIRC Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year by his peers. In addition, 318 student-athletes were honored with NIRC All-Academic accolades.

For a student-athlete to be recognized to the NIRC All-Academic Team they must have completed one full-year at their institution (freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible), maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.35 and be recognized as a varsity letter winner.  A full list of winners can be found below.

Steenstra earned the Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year titles after guiding Bates to a remarkable sweep in every category the Bobcats entered in this year’s regatta. In addition, the women’s program earned the points title while both the men and women combined to win the overall team points trophy.

“I'm humbled to be granted this recognition from my fellow NIRC coaches and incredibly grateful to my assistant coaches, Lizzie Kinney and Haley Eovine, for their tireless effort,” expressed Steenstra on the honor.  “And to the men and women of Bates I express my deepest appreciation and respect for their collective enthusiasm, dedication and desire for speed.”

The Bobcat women will defend their NCAA National Championship title this weekend in Sarasota, Fla. while the men qualified for the program’s first-ever Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship, which will be held in West Windsor, N.J. on June 1-3.
