WORCESTER, Mass. – The National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC) has announced the recipients of the regatta’s postseason awards. Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) head coach, Larry Noble, was recognized as Men’s Coach of the Year while Peter Steenstra of Bates College was named Women’s Coach of the Year. In addition, 303 student-athletes were recognized to the NIRC All-Academic team with another 30 named to the 2017 NIRC All-Stewards Team.
Their peers selected Noble and Steenstra for this recognition after leading their respective programs to impressive seasons. Noble’s Engineers orchestrated a bronze-medal performance in the Varsity Eight while the 2nd Varsity Eight crossed the finish first in the petite final at the NIRC. The bronze medal came on the heels of a gutsy and invigorating performance a week earlier as the Varsity Eight captured gold at the New England Rowing Championships (NERC). The victory marked their first NERC Championship in 38 years.
Steenstra captured Women’s Coach of the Year after the Varsity Eight defeated Williams College by .401 seconds to capture gold on Lake Q this past week. The Women’s 2nd Varsity Eight also snagged gold hardware while the 3rd Varsity Eight secured silver. The Bobcats will represent the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) in the NCAA Division III Championships. This marks the program’s 11th consecutive trip to the national stage.
For a student-athlete to be recognized to the NIRC All-Academic Team they must have completed one full-year at their institution (freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible), maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.35 and be recognized as a varsity letter winner.
Coaches are also able to nominate one student-athlete per program for additional recognition as a member of the NIRC All-Stewards Team. This recognition is left to the discretion of each institution’s coach to provide another level of recognition for a deserving member of their program. This award goes to captains, outstanding oarsmen and women, team leaders or other key contributors of their respective program.
